Crash Responder Safety Week 2024: National Kickoff Webinar

This kickoff event, hosted by FHWA Office of Transportation Operations, honored responders, provided an overview of activities taking place across the country, and connected all responder stakeholders to resources that helps them become champions and advocates for responder safety.

Kristin White, FHWA Acting Administrator, welcomed webinar attendees and emphasized the importance FHWA places on responder safety and the safety of all road users. Acting Administrator White highlighted key FHWA programs to improve the safety of our nation’s first responders. Additionally, the webinar featured:

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is optimizing traffic signal timing using the Ohio Corridor Ranking Application (OCRA) tool to enhance safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. ODOT plans to improve safety by retiming dangerous corridors with the use of Travel Time Reliability, Delay Data, ADT, and the date of the corridor last being re-timed. With a benefit-to-cost ratio of 40:1, this data-driven approach ensures resources are allocated effectively, maximizing the impact of investments. Overall, this initiative promotes safer travel and efficient use of funds, ultimately benefiting all Ohioans.

This interactive discussion, hosted by the National Operations Center of Excellence and ITS America, offered an opportunity to explore select key topics of interest related to advancing Active Transportation in 2024.

Active transportation networks—including bike lanes, sidewalks, and multi-use trails—help create vibrant communities by providing safe, comfortable, convenient, reliable, efficient, and affordable ways for people to get around. The videos below features remarks from industry experts exploring topics such as: road and curb use, emerging modes and technologies, and policy needs and considerations.

Input from this forum is being leveraged to promote knowledge sharing around the state of the industry and associated challenges, needs, considerations, and future-facing opportunities.
