PennDOT Project Highlights Role of
Data Management in Operating the Transportation System

Earlier this week, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) was announced as the 2021 NOCoE TSMO Awards Overall Winner. PennDOT won for their “TSMO Performance Program and Traffic Operations Analytics Tool,” which provides real-time incident and congestion information that allows for actionable decisions to keep their highways safer for the traveling public.

Congestion pie charts have been a fundamental part of TSMO but having real-time information on non-recurrent congestion will allow agencies to make significant choices in how they manage their roadways. That the project originated from ideas presented via the FHWA Every Day Counts initiative, only emphasizes the importance of knowledge sharing to advance the nation’s TSMO capabilities.

The NOCoE TSMO awards celebrate the expanding role TSMO is playing in getting the most out of our existing transportation system by managing and operating networks in an efficient manner that emphasizes safety and mobility. Case studies of outstanding work, like this award-winning PennDOT project, assist in the effort to share knowledge and empower the broader workforce.

The 2022 TSMO Awards are now open for submissions. More information on this year's categories and submission process can be found at transportationops.org/tsmoawards.
