SPaT Challenge: Deployment Status and Lessons Learned

• Mike Schagrin

Mike started SCI after working for the US Department of Transportation for over 20 years, since the inception of Intelligent Transportation Systems. As the Program Manager for Connected Vehicle Safety & Road Vehicle Automation, he led the creation and execution of programs that are cornerstones to the success of today's US DOT ITS research program. Mike is also a recognized expert and leader in ITS internationally, previously as the US Head of Delegation to ISO TC 204 and more recently, as the co-chair for the EU/US Collaboration Task Force on ITS Cooperative Systems and Co-chair for the EU/US/Japan Working Group on ITS Road Vehicle Automation. 

• Blaine Leonard

Blaine is the Research Program Manager for the Utah Department of Transportation. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Utah. Blaine served as ASCE President in 2009-2010. Blaine is a founding Diplomate in the Academy of Geo-Professionals and holds a P.E. license in addition to his Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering (D.GE) credential. Blaine is President-Elect of the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Geo-Professionals.

• Faisa Saleem

Faisal is the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Branch Manager at Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). He was recently awarded the Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O) Council's Individual Achievement Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). The award was presented at the TSM&O Council Meeting at the ITE Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Sunday, July 30. This national award recognizes Saleem’s dedication to continuous learning and application of new technologies and methods to ensure that Maricopa County has innovative technology available to implement on the region’s roadways. Faisal’s efforts over the last two decades have helped Maricopa County become a leader in planning and implementing ITS and CV technologies. This work not only improves efficiency on our roads but also increases safety for the thousands of roadway users who travel on Maricopa County roadways every day. Throughout his career, Saleem has made it his top priority to enhance the transportation experience and provide a seamless transportation system for the traveling public through innovation, collaboration, and cooperation. He oversees MCDOT’s ITS efforts, which includes the MCDOT SMARTDrive℠ Program, the Traffic Management Center (TMC), Regional Emergency Action Coordination Team (REACT), and the Regional Archived Data System (RADS).
