Talking TIM Webinar Series: February 2021

Overview

The Talking TIM webinar series, brought to you by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), provides a forum where TIM champions with any level of experience can exchange information about current practices, programs, and technologies. Each month, the FHWA TIM Program Team will feature content that highlights successful programs, identifies best practices, and showcases technology that advances the profession. This month, the FHWA TIM Program focused on Innovative Tools for Responder and Road Worker Safety:

  • HAAS Alert – Jeremy Agulnek, VP of Connected Car at HAAS Alert, provided information on features and benefits from this early warning system for notifying drivers of upcoming responder activity.
  • MakeWay Safety – Michael Walsh, CEO & founder, provided information on features and benefits from this early warning system for notifying drivers of upcoming responder activity.
  • iCone Products LLC - Ross Scheckler, CTO, highlighted “Internet of Road Work” products that report work zone data directly to navigation systems and the in-dash of connected cars.

The FHWA TIM program managers, Paul Jodoin and Jim Austrich, also provided news associated with the National TIM Responder Training and other FHWA initiatives. Speaker bios

Mike Walsh (MakeWay Safety): Founder, visionary and a champion for the First Responder community.  Mike has  a 40 year career in banking, finance and consulting.  Mike has been a friend and supporter of First Responders in the State of Missouri for decades, which led to the development of the MakeWay Safety technology.  His conversations with leaders in Fire, EMS, Police and DOT regarding his experiences on the road and personal observations of motorists disregard  of emergency vehicles with lights and sirens on while responding to or on the scene of an incident was the genesis of MakeWay’s patented technology.

Jeremy Agulnek (HAAS Alert):As VP of Connected Car at HAAS Alert, Jeremy is responsible for productizing real-time safety applications within the automotive and mobility industry.  Prior to HAAS Alert, Jeremy brings Product, Sales, and Strategy expertise from various technology software and data companies. He spent 7+ years in the automotive technology industry at HERE Technologies, where he had global oversight for a next-generation product portfolio, and has sold marketing software into large and mid-size enterprises. Jeremy holds a BSE in Electrical Engineering from University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Chicago Booth.

Ross Sheckler (iCone Products LLC): Mr. Sheckler has a BS and MS in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University and started his career with stints in aerodynamic and structural design at Boeing Commercial Aircraft. After leaving Boeing Mr. Sheckler applied his extensive knowledge from the aerospace sector providing design and systems consultation to a variety of entities in the heavy truck, aerospace and energy sectors. In 2005 the State of New York asked Mr. Sheckler’s company, Calmar Research, to create a simpler, more robust traffic monitoring system based upon principles from the truck telematics industry. The effort resulted in the creation of iCone Products LLC and a series of work zone ITS products based upon simplicity and affordability. Mr. Sheckler has advised NASA, the US DOE, the US DOT, the US EPA, the Army and the US Air Force. Mr. Sheckler has been a guest lecturer in the Aerospace Department of Syracuse University and served as the President of Iowa State University’s Industry Advisor Council. Mr. Sheckler has served as the Vice Chair of ATSSA’s Innovation Council and the Chair of the Work Zone ITS Subcommittee.
