Message from the Managing Director

TSMO is definitely buzzing around our industry and the growing momentum of support and activities from the AASHTO Subcommittee on TSMO and ITE’s TSMO council is very encouraging as NOCoE looks to collaborate and work with the entire community to build this practice.
 
As I reconnected with transportation practitioners over the past several weeks, there seemed to be a common thread that is self-evident in the description of NOCoE and its mission; TSMO is the logical next step for our profession. I described to those that I met (who happened to be hearing about NOCoE and sometimes TSMO for the first time) that TSMO is really the cultivation of the efforts that got us here and the technology/ideas that will take us forward.

We are working in a time now where the people and technology within and around TSMO can support the advanced ideas that we have always had, which will propel us to the next generation of managing and operating our transportation infrastructure. We don’t have a silver bullet to showcase as a product because our combined efforts, innovation, and positive impact, are the silver bullet.

Upcoming Event: 2016 Joint AASHTO SCOTSEM-TRB Critical Infrastructure Annual Meeting

AASHTO's Special Committee on Transportation Security and Emergency Management (SCOTSEM) would like to invite you to participate in the 2016 Joint AASHTO SCOTSEM-TRB Critical Infrastructure Annual Meeting inTucson, Arizona, August 21-24, 2016. This four-day joint meeting will bring AASHTO members and the research community together in a broad-based forum on emergency management principles and critical infrastructure protection. By attending, you will have access to current national practices, as well as ongoing research, which will help your department be better prepared for natural and human-caused disasters. As in the past, this summit will help SCOTSEM members to assist their Chief Executive Officers in preparing and implementing executive responsive and recovery actions necessary to address emergency and security incidents. The theme of this year’s annual meeting is “Building a Resilient Transportation Network,” and will highlight best practices from states around the country and showcase training opportunities from AASHTO's Federal partners. FHWA’S ‘Traffic Incident Management’ Reaches Major Milestone

Federal Highway Administration officials announced on August 10th that the 200,000^themergency responder has completed the “Traffic Incident Management” (TIM) responder training. The life-saving training is part of a national effort to improve the safety of first responders and others on the scene of highway crashes.

“This training is vital to the men and women who arrive at the scene of a highway crash who often risk their own lives bringing safety and care to others,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “Besides protecting emergency workers and ensuring crash victims receive immediate attention, these practices reduce the chance of secondary crashes and prevent traffic jams by keeping traffic moving for other drivers.” Please click here to read the full press release.
