PennDOT Roundup

During the ITS America State DOT Plenary Session on May 31, various state DOT directors gave brief overviews of what activities their respective agencies were currently involved in and what is to come. Following is a brief overview of what is happening at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation:

Pennsylvania DOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards shared that Pennsylvania DOT is currently operating 2,500 ITS devices across the state and expects to deploy an additional 350 devices over the next three years. The state has three transportation management centers that provide 24/7 coverage for all districts. There are more than 13,500 traffic signals and 134 adapted traffic signal intersections throughout the state. Pennsylvania also has a Green Light Go Program; this program identifies traffic signal intersections that are not working corrrectly and the agency then applies for a grant; the state matches them. Richards says the program has been very successful and strengthens relationships with municipalities.

PennDOT's 511 has received 2.3 million calls in the last year and the agency has had 31,000 app downloads by users. Richards added that PennDOT is collaborating with Carnegie Mellon to utilize the university's research efforts and that the university has also been helping the agency utilize social media. PennDOT is also working with the University of MD in research efforts and working to establish an automated vehicle working group.
