New Connected Vehicle Data Environments Now Available in the Research Data Exchange
The Research Data Exchange (RDE) now houses three new connected vehicle data environments from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Dynamic Mobility Application (DMA) program.
The RDE is a web-based data resource provided by the USDOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program. It collects, manages, and provides access to archived and real-time multi-source and multi-modal data to support the development and testing of ITS applications. The following additional data environments are now available in the RDE.
Intelligent Network Flow Optimization (INFLO)
This project's purpose was to demonstrate the functionality and performance of two prototype applications in an operational traffic environment. The INFLO speed harmonization (SPD-HARM) and queue warning (Q-WARN) applications were demonstrated from January 12 through January 16, 2015, on a segment of I-5 in Seattle, WA.
The available data sets include:
•Basic Safety Messages (BSMs) sent by vehicles through either the cellular network or dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) when the vehicle is in the range of roadside units
•The queue warning messages recommended by the Q-WARN algorithm and sent to vehicles to warn drivers upstream of the queue
•The speed harmonization messages recommended by the SPD-HARM algorithm and sent to vehicles to provide drivers with the recommended speed
•The real-time infrastructure traffic sensor data collected from the Washington Department of Transportation's detector station data files in a 20-second interval for the I-5 segments monitored by the INFLO algorithms.
Integrated Dynamic Transit Operation (IDTO)
These data sets are from the prototype testing conducted in Columbus, OH, in April 2014 on three IDTO applications: Connection Protection (T-CONNECT), Dynamic Transit Operations (T-DISP), and Dynamic Ridesharing (D-RIDE). The data sets include:
•Data that relates to the providers who collectively represent or furnish the transportation supply to meet the transportation demand
•Data that relates to the T-CONNECT ecosystem, which contains various components of the T-CONNECT application
•Data that stores each traveler's location (the data is only stored if a traveler takes a trip with a T-DISP or T-CONNECT opportunity, and the traveler has selected to share his or her location using the mobile application)
•Data that relates to the vehicles used during this observation.
Response, Emergency Staging and Communications, Uniform Management, and Evacuation (R.E.S.C.U.M.E.)
The R.E.S.C.U.M.E. application bundle aims to advance the transmission of vehicle to vehicle safety messaging over DSRC to improve the safety of emergency responders and travelers. R.E.S.C.U.M.E. includes three applications: Response Staging (RESP-STG), Incident Zone (INC-ZONE), and Emergency Communications and Evacuation (EVAC).
The EVAC application was simulated but not prototyped. RESP-STG and INC-ZONE were prototyped and demonstrated in Columbus, OH, and Sykesville, MD. Twelve scenarios illustrated the functionality of the RESP-STG and INC-ZONE applications, which were viewed from the perspectives of the transportation center, the responder, and the oncoming vehicle. The data included in the RDE is primarily the communication logs between the smartphone application and the research laptops. When the laptop application is set to active, a sequence of messages show the laptop connecting to the different system devices. The log indicates when the laptop successfully connects to the device.
Researchers, application developers, and others are invited to visit the RDE website to explore the available data and resources. For more information, please contact Jon Obenberger at jon.obenberger@dot.gov.
