IDOT Program Aims To Recycle Old Signs
Just a few of the signs drivers rely on to be safe on the road are the stop, yield, and railroad signs. But what happens when it's time to replace them?
A program through the Department of Transportation are going green by recycling the signs which allow the department to help preserve the environment and practice sustainability by reusing materials.
We drive past signs like this every day. Some request you stop and others urge drivers to exercise safe driving habits. Like everything in life, wear and tear sets in eventually.
"They don't last forever. They have a life. When they come in here they are at the end of their run," said Brian Williamsen with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Old and mangled signs from across the state are sent here to the Central Sign Shop in Springfield. Instead of throwing them away, they are recycled and put back on the streets.
