The city officially launched a new mobile phone app this morning that allows Detroiters to report problems ranging from potholes to water main breaks.

Called Improve Detroit, the app "is like having City Hall on your phone," Mayor Mike Duggan said. He and his top technology officials, including chief information officer Beth Niblock, announced the app at a news conference this morning.

The app is free at online Google Play and Apple stores. But residents also may report problems online from the city's website, www.detroitmi.gov.

The app "marks a fundamental change in the way city government operates," Duggan said this morning, adding that the app allows residents to become city government's "eyes and ears" for problems that develop, from running water in basements at abandoned homes and nonworking traffic signals to missing manhole covers, downed streetlight poles and broken fire hydrants.
