TRB Panel Discussion - Session 489 Innovative Strategies and Tools to Advance Operations Programs, Strategies, and Practices: Impacts of SHRP 2 Reliability

Start Date:

-

Summary:

Today more than ever, transportation agencies must find ways to operate the transportation network more reliably. Rising customer expectations for more dependable travel times and increased accountability coupled with a growing reliance on technology and big data, all with reduced resources, form an ever-changing environment. To help transportation agencies meet these challenges, the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) developed tools and training to advance transportation systems management and operations (TSMO). This session presents a retrospective on how agencies have implemented SHRP2 Reliability tools to evaluate their TSMO capabilities, improve business processes and workforce capabilities, consider travel time reliability in traffic and investment analysis, and enhance interagency collaboration for safer, more reliable system performance. The session will illustrate how SHRP2 Reliability has been transformational for operation of the transportation system and transportation agencies.

This session will be in a panel format, with an opening roundtable of each panelist providing an overview of where their State is with TSMO and how they used SHRP2 products and opportunities to advance TSMO in their State, followed by a panel discussion that includes time for audience questions.  Discussion topics include:

  • How did SHRP2 Reliability change your agency’s way of doing business?
  • How has it changed your agency’s culture regarding TSMO?
  • Where could we go from here with faster, more holistic operations research and implementation?
