The USDOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Professional Capacity Building Program (PCB) will host a free Talking Technology and Transportation (T3) Webinar to discuss current and emerging technologies in traveler information systems.
As information and communications technology advances and evolves, travelers have an ever-increasing desire and need for accurate, timely information on current travel conditions (pre-trip and en-route) to help them make informed transportation decisions. This webinar will provide an overview of the recently completed report "Next Generation Traveler Information System: A Five Year Outlook." The webinar will identify technologies in traveler information systems that are either current or predicted to emerge over the next 5 years. It will also provide recommendations to transportation agencies regarding proactively addressing technology advancements, changes in traveler information business models and decisions, public expectations, and further research recommendations

Jimmy Chu, a Transportation Specialist on the Traveler Information Management Team at the Federal Highway Administration, will host the webinar.
Glenn Blackwelder, Traffic Operations Engineer for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), will moderate the webinar. Mr. Blackwelder will also lead a discussion on the traveler information industry in Utah and how UDOT creates partnerships with neighboring states. UDOT's 511 phone line was launched in 2001, making it one of the oldest in the country. But now UDOT is focused on determining what the next generation of this traveler information system will look like. This includes questions regarding dynamic message signs, connected vehicles, and the future value of the 511 phone lines.
Michael Waisley will introduce the "Next Generation Traveler Information Systems: A Five Year Outlook" as well as the Transportation Management Center Pooled-Fund Study. Mr. Waisley is a Senior Research Scientist with Battelle, supporting a range of efforts including managing projects on next generation traveler information systems, connected vehicles, weather responsive traffic management, and integrated corridor management.
Valerie Shuman, Principal at Shuman Consulting Group, LLC, will provide an executive overview of "Next Generation Traveler Information Systems: A Five Year Outlook."
John Hall, a Motorist Information Coordinator for the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), will discuss the current status of TDOT's motorist information efforts and the state's future endeavors.
