Overview
This webinar was part of a FHWA Office of Operations project to present information on active interchange management (AIM). AIM encompassed a variety of operational strategies to improve traffic flow and safety at freeway interchanges. AIM was a modern approach to traffic management that focused on optimizing the flow of vehicles at interchange merge and diverge areas and ramp terminals, where congestion and safety issues often originated.
The webinar described AIM, the strategies that were included, and potential benefits. It also discussed the situations under which AIM might be applicable and provided example locations where AIM had been implemented. It presented a methodology that could be used to determine which AIM strategies might be useful for subject interchange areas. Finally, potential challenges in implementing AIM strategies were discussed.
