V2X and TSMO Peer Exchange Report

Overview

The National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE) hosted the V2X and TSMO Peer Exchange in College Station, Texas to share information between a cross section of transportation agency professionals in research, TSMO, and ITS roles. The NOCoE has been coordinating resources for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology since 2016 when it started focusing on the use of signal phase and timing (SPaT) applications being deployed as part of the CAT Coalition’s SPaT Challenge. Additionally, NOCoE has held V2X focused peer exchanges in Salt Lake City (hosted by Utah DOT) and Phoenix (hosted by Maricopa County DOT) and hosted numerous webinars on V2X enabled applications. This peer exchange was designed to build on these past efforts and help to reinvigorate the national conversation on V2X technology.

The purpose was to facilitate an exchange of information on V2X technology. The meeting focused on operational updates and discussions about V2X technology deployment across various transportation agencies, with participants sharing experiences and challenges related to implementing connected vehicle systems. Updates were provided for ongoing projects in Utah, Michigan, Georgia, Maricopa County, Arizona and Nashville, Tennessee as well as those being conducted through the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI).

In addition to a deployment roundtable discussion, there were sessions on conveying the operational benefits of V2X to leadership and stakeholders, and the other requirements necessary to operate a transportation system with a large scale V2X deployment. Attendees were encouraged to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with deploying V2X, as well as to share best practices. There was an emphasis on the importance of mutual learning, noting that some attendees were more advanced in their V2X implementation than others.

The participants were encouraged to actively participate by sharing their questions, comments, and current practices among each other. Participants are able to reach out to presenters for further information or assistance, and were asked how the NOCoE, its partner associations, and FHWA help them in their journey to implement V2X technologies.
