Planning Guidance for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Devices

Overview

This document is a summary of the activities completed in order to develop warrants for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices, including Closed Circuit Television, Dynamic Message Signs, Highway Advisory Radio, Road Weather Information Systems, Variable Speed Limit Signs, Dynamic Speed Display Signs, Curve Warning Systems, Ramp Meters, Intelligent Work Zones, and Intersection Conflict Warning Systems. There still remains an increasing number of requests for deployment of technology devices, a challenge that transportation professionals at every level have to address. The approach taken to this project was to take after the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) warrants for traffic signal installations. Using this as a model, the ITS planning guidelines identify criterion to assist deployment decisions of technology devices.
