Pennsylvania DOT Highway Safety and Traffic Operations Roadmap

Overview

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) serves as a comprehensive blueprint to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on Pennsylvania roadways. The plan identifies Priority Emphasis Areas, including Lane Departure Crashes, Impaired Driving, and Pedestrian Safety, as well as additional Safety Focus Areas that significantly impact highway safety across the state. Over the five-year period from 2016 to 2020, Pennsylvania averaged 1,141 highway fatalities and 4,446 serious injuries annually. The SHSP aims to address these statistics by implementing targeted strategies and actions in the identified emphasis areas. By focusing on these key areas, PennDOT strives to enhance overall traffic safety and reduce roadway incidents throughout the Commonwealth.
