Next Generation Traffic Data and Incident Detection from Video

Overview

The goal of this project was to document the potential for Video Analytics to be used by traffic operations centers (TOCs) and for traffic data collection. Video Analytics Systems in Iowa, Missouri, and Ontario were tested and evaluated. The components included: Traffic Data Collection (comparing the Video Analytics to trusted data sources), Incident Detection (comparing Video Analytics alerts to still images, video clips, and reported incidents to validate accuracy of detection), Wrong-Way Vehicle Controlled Test (a test to observe the ability of the Video Analytics systems to detect wrong-way movements), and Observations from Agency Staff (representatives from agencies provided feedback).

The results indicate that Video Analytics is a useful tool that could be put into current use. This report also contains some use case scenarios and lessons learned. Agencies can use these to plan for their use of Video Analytics systems.
