Missouri DOT Example Incident Response Assessment

Overview

A construction project that would occur on 10 miles of I-64 required attention regarding how to best handle the construction period's traffic demands. Since there are about 170,000 vehicles on this stretch of I-64 daily, there were concerns about closing down the interstate while construction was taking place and moving the affected traffic to arterial roads. In addition, the arterial service patrol (I-64 Traffic Response) deployed during the major construction project was evaluated to demonstrate the value of Traffic Incident Management (TIM) practices.

This document is a research study by Organizational Results in cooperation with the I-64 Traffic Response Study, St. Louis Area District Traffic and the Traffic Division.

In determining the benefits of an arterial service patrol program, the following factors were evaluated: reduction in traffic delays, reduction in fuel and emission savings, reduction in secondary crashes, and reduction response staff. The results are contained in this report.
