Earthquake Preparedness, Response and Recovery Plan

Overview

The purpose of this document is to ensure that all aspects of the Department of Transportation are prepared take necessary action in the event of an earthquake, including being prepared to open, close, and operate highways, establish communication to affected areas, provide rapid response, provide quick and accurate assessment of damages, and establish alternate travel routes where necessary, following a significant earthquake. The focus is on the districts of Illinois and the surrounding area where an earthquake is more likely to occur, namely, districts 7, 8, and 9. This document outlines the main responsibilities of certain organizations and people in the event of an earthquake. It also lays out different scenarios depending on the various magnitudes at which an earthquake could occur. Furthermore, there are multiple attachments further describing emergency route plans, emergency communications, and preparedness for earthquakes.
