Overview
Intersection crashes are a significant contributor to the number of transportation fatalities and serious injuries across the country. In recent years, multiple intersection conflict warning systems (ICWS) have been developed and used in many different states and locations, without sufficient guidance with regard to regulations about the signs or other warning systems. This has led to a growing need to work towards standardization across the country, using the experience gained from the many different approaches of various states.
The purpose of this project was to develop a consistent approach for more uniform deployment of ICWS. This was done through a webinar and two in-person workshops, in which participants assembled information about their experience with ICWS. The compiled information is presented here, providing a recommended practice for the design and evaluation ICWS.
