Crashworthiness and Protection of ITS Field Devices

Overview

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices include a variety of traffic control device displays that are required to be within the roadway clear zone. These devices are required to be crashworthy. Agencies planning to utilize ITS devices within the clear zone must ensure that they are crashworthy by being protected by a barrier or mounted on a breakaway support in such a way that will be safe in a crash.

This project's goal was to document the resources available to agencies in order to assist them in designing and deploying crashworthy ITS devices in the road clear zone.
