Project Neon: ATMS Summary

By Denise M. Inda, PE, PTOE, CPM, Chief Traffic Operations Engineer
Nevada DOT

As part of the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Project Neon – a nearly $1 billion investment to widen Interstate 15 through downtown Las Vegas– a “first of its kind in Nevada” active traffic management system will be installed early on in the project, which will enable the contractor to use the system for maintenance of traffic during construction.

The signs will be far more sophisticated than the existing dynamic signage that shows travel times to freeway exits and can be programmed to inform motorists of lane closures and blockages that occur with traffic crashes or construction.  In addition, the system is designed to provide speed harmonization by posting variable speed limits within the corridor to provide advanced noticed of congestion or backups. Signs will show the status of every lane as motorists approach the I-15/U.S. 95 “Spaghetti Bowl” interchange that sees 300,000 vehicles daily and 25,000 lane changes per hour. NOCoE Webinar: Performance Measurement and Monitoring in TSM&O - Current Practice and Future Developments

Please join us April 22, 2:00-3:30 p.m. EST. Performance measurement and monitoring are becoming increasingly important to state departments of transportation as they work to improve the transportation system’s service to its users and contribution to the nation’s economy and general well-being. Growing federal program emphasis on system performance measurement and management is encouraging efforts to develop effective performance measures and performance monitoring practices.

This webinar will focus on the presenters findings and opinions from research such as NCHRP 20-07(366), led by Aleks Stevanovic for AASHTO’s Standing Committee on Highways with support from the NCHRP. Further, the presenters will discuss what we should anticipate in the near future. Please click here for more information and here to register.
