With more drivers using mobile software apps to keep track of traffic problems even as safety officials warn about cellphone distractions, the Iowa Department of Transportation has updated its "Iowa 511" app to provide "hands-free, eyes-free audio notifications of traffic events while driving."

The department said its Iowa 511 mobile app update includes a "Tell Me" feature that "will more easily inform drivers of Iowa's road conditions without having to look at their smartphones." Previously, users had to interact with the app in order to view details about traffic situations they might encounter.

"Traveler safety is our top priority, and the audio notifications will allow drivers behind the wheel to pay attention to the road and not become distracted by their devices," said Sinclair Stolle, traveler information program engineer at the Iowa DOT.
