Overview
Managing Disruptions to Operations Data Exchange (MDODE) is a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) initiative that promotes the sharing of transportation operations disruptions data (e.g., work zones, traffic incidents, special events, road weather) among public agencies, private organizations, and other stakeholders. MDODE aims to make near real-time operations disruptions data easier to share and use by improving:
- Standardization: Common formats enable information sharing on disruptions.
- Discoverability: Content descriptions and provider listings help users identify which data are available and who provides them.
- Trustworthiness: Information about data quality and security helps users assess whether the data are reliable and appropriate for their needs.
- Innovation: Accelerate innovation by making diverse data easier to integrate and analyze.
MDODE enhances situational awareness across jurisdictions, which leads to better traveler information, freight trip planning, incident response, and safety for both the traveling public and highway workers. MDODE complements related national efforts, such as Digital Infrastructure, that together support the development of Connected Corridors across the United States.
During 2025 and 2026, FHWA hosted a webinar series featuring perspectives from key MDODE stakeholder groups, including State and local departments of transportation, freight organizations, data aggregators and service providers, researchers, and advanced transportation management system (ATMS) developers. Presenters discussed current practices, challenges, and opportunities for sharing high-quality, trusted information about nonrecurring transportation events, as well as how MDODE can help meet those needs.
