Webinar Materials: Metropolitan Planning Organizations: Preparing for Connected/Autonomous Vehicles

Overview

The impending connected/automated/autonomous vehicle technologies create a paradigm shift for public agencies at all levels, but especially metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) and local agencies. This webinar will present a perspective on how to approach planning at a local and regional level for these new technologies, especially focused around their potential impact on traffic operations and mobility. Currently available tools will also be discussed that will be of assistance in defining connected vehicle approaches.

  • Alan Clelland, Senior Vice President Transportation Systems, Iteris
    • Alan Clelland is a Senior Vice President in the Transportation Systems division of Iteris He has over 40 years of experience in transportation engineering and traffic control and management in university research, local government and the private sector in Britain, The Netherlands, Portugal, Mexico and the United States. 
      Mr. Clelland is a past Chair of ITS California, serves as a Senior Advisor to the ITS California Board and is on California Polytechnic State University, Pomona’s Industry Advisory Council.
      He has a BS degree in Physics and Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds, England, is a registered electrical engineer in Europe, certified Project Management Professional and certified Scrum Master.

  • Cliff Heise, Vice President,Federal and Research Programs, Transportation Systems, Iteris

    • Cliff Heise has over 32 years of experience in the areas of project management and systems and software engineering throughout all phases of program development.  He has been the Program Manager of the National ITS Architecture Program for Iteris since 1996 and has been involved in all aspects of the program’s outreach, maintenance, and management.  Most recently, Cliff has managed the development of the Connected Vehicle Reference Implementation Architecture and its companion software tool under the National ITS Architecture Program.  Cliff is the Vice President of Federal and Research Programs for Iteris in Fairfax, VA.  He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Oklahoma State University.

 

Target Audience:

MPO and Operations staff at the mid and upper management levels involved in planning and decision-making roles concerning the future direction of transportation and technology application within a region or agency.
