Summary:

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) seek to engage traffic incident management (TIM) professionals from around the nation for a 2-day workshop at the Tennessee Traffic Incident Management Training Facility. The objective of this engagement is to assist TDOT and THP with the creation of curriculum, based in part on the national responder training course, to support the dedicated TIM training facility located in Nashville. Collaboration with the National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE) will enhance the efforts of Tennessee and provide immediate and proactive benefit to the practice of TIM across the nation.

This workshop is scheduled for July 15-16. See the attached informational brochure. We request that you register for this event by July 1, 2015.

Learning Objectives:

The second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) was funded by Congress to research ways to better operate the Nation’s roads, and it is comprised of four research focus areas – safety, renewal, reliability, and capacity.  The TIM Responder Training is one of the first programs to come out of the SHRP2 research.  As a result, FHWA supports national TIM responder train the trainer sessions in cooperation with State Police, DOT, and Fire leadership throughout the country.  The intent is to reach thousands of responders over the next few years, with instruction on responder safety and safe, quick clearance of major highway incidents.

In addition to being a key outcome of the SHRP2 efforts, this training is also one of 13 key innovations that comprise FHWA’s Every Day Counts (EDC2) initiative, which is focused on leading-edge methods to accelerate the delivery of various highway innovations, as well as improve the efficiency and safety of the U.S. highway system.

The national TIM responder training  provides the opportunity to bring responders from multiple disciplines together to ensure the highest level of partnership and communication, as well as a firsthand understanding of each other’s responsibilities.

This initiative continues the momentum that has been established through the NTIMC, National Unified Goal, FHWA’s advanced TIM workshops held for mid-level managers, and many other TIM efforts at the national and local level.
